Stellantis chose California for supplies of the lithium needed to manufacture electrified vehicles in North America. In particular, the group led by Carlos Tavares has entered into a binding agreement with Controlled Thermal Resources (CTR) to obtain part of the lithium oxide mined in Imperial County. It is a desert area, on the border with Mexico, also known as Lithium Valley for its extractive potential.

The project. CTR has launched the Hell’s Kitchen project in the area, with the aim of recovering lithium from geothermal brines through a particular extraction process aimed at reducing the environmental impact of the mining phases. The company intends to use renewable energy and steam in an integrated closed-loop process, which eliminates the need for brine evaporation ponds, open pit mining and fossil fuel-powered processing processes. The project involves the production of lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate for batteries, with an estimated capacity of the field at over 300,000 tons per year.

Supply. The agreement signed with Stellantis has a ten-year duration and establishes that CTR supplies up to 25,000 tons of lithium hydroxide per year, almost the same quantity agreed in Europe with the Vulcan Energy for the supply, always of the same material, but extracted from geothermal brine present in the subsoil of the upper Rhine valley, in Germany. “In the fight against global warming, strengthening the supply chain for battery electric vehicles is absolutely crucial to supporting our electrification ambitions. By securing a relevant, competitive and low-carbon supply of lithium from various partners around the world, we will be able to execute our plans to produce electric vehicles in a responsible way, “says Tavares, while Rod Colwell, CEO of CTR , underlines that the agreement with Stellantis “sets new parameters for the automotive sector in the United States. The supply of clean lithium, produced with energy from a renewable resource, helps to further decarbonise the battery supply chain. All this makes it possible to produce cars in a more sustainable way and with a lower environmental impact “.
