If 1988 is considered the point of arrival in competitions with the Scuderia Italia of Formula 1, Dallara Automobili has consolidated its presence on tracks all over the world with two other single-seaters: the Indycars and the Formula 3. After landing in the States, in 2010 the Engineer of the two worlds enters GP3, the category considered the springboard for young talents towards Formula 2 and 1. Nine years later, Dallara Automobili wins the contract issued by the FIA ​​for the creation of the single-seater for the new Formula 3 World Championship. The specifications provided for a compromise between technology, performance, cost control and maximum. Was there any doubt about it? They were satisfied. The younger sister of the F2 / 18, the Dallara F3 is equipped with a safety cell in composite materials, with shock-absorbing structures and anti-intrusion panels in the side areas. As in F1, the driver is also protected by the Halo, while the rims are held in place by steel cables to prevent them from detaching in the event of an accident. Engineer Dallara has never failed to underline how he has always loved racing without underestimating its dangers. He can thank the 17-year-old German driver Sophia Floersch, if from the terrifying accident at the 2018 Macau GP she came out with minimal damage, after being thrown off the track like a meteorite splinter.

For Gian Paolo Dallara, Formula 3 is the goal of an articulated path that began long before: even in 1980, six years after the company was founded. One shot, one hit: Dallara wins the Italian category with Guido Pardini and in 1985 presented the F385, the first with ground-effect aerodynamics and the monocoque frame in carbon fiber, a material seen so far only on some Formula 1 cars “We had a bit of a mixed start, but the carbon frame gave us the decisive push”, the Engineer told Daniele Buzzonetti in the book “From Emilia to conquering the world”, published by Artioli 1899. ” To make it happen, the engineer Harvey Postlethwaite, who was an expert in the sector, gave me a hand. The choice of the promising French talent Jean Alesi contributes to resolving the impasse, who in 1986 bought the first F385 that appeared on the other side of the Alps. The economic sacrifice is rewarded by two victories and by the second final position in the transalpine F3, which allows him to move in 1987 to a leading team, the ORECA. Here he convinces manager Hugues de Chaunac to bet on Dallara.

Having conquered France, it’s time to cross the Channel. Breaking through such a competitive and competitive environment as that of the British F3 is even more difficult, so in Varano they make the decision to go step by step and entrust a car to a smaller team. Works. And in ’93, with the championship underway, the team of Paul Stewart, son of the great Jackie, replaced the Reynards with the Italian single-seater F393, leading to the title Kelvin Burto. Team that wins, imitates itself: the other leading teams also choose Made in Italy. Thanks to the refined planning, Dallara goes from 25% to almost all of its presence on the grid in just a year. For its part, Paul Stewart’s team gives an encore bringing Jan Magnussen to the title. “The spread of the cars in various countries and the acceptance of the F3 in Japan have allowed us to build around 60, 70 new single-seaters every year”, confirms Gian Paolo Dallara. “These numbers have facilitated the economic investment in research, which has favored consensus even more. Sometimes I get chills when I think that in a certain period our main activity was in the F3 … Fortunately we have always tried to diversify” . Thus, while in 2018 the American from Rome Eddie Cheever won the first victory for Dallara in Formula Indy, Dallara was awarded the supply of the single-seaters for the newborn FIA Formula 3 championship.

Compared to the previous GP3, the 2019 F3 is larger in size. The aerodynamics are more aggressive, take advantage of the downforce generated by the bottom and are equipped with the DRS system to facilitate overtaking. The engine is a 3.4-liter Mecachrome 6-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, which through the drive by wire accelerator delivers 380 hp at 8,000 rpm, power and 300 km / h of top speed, managed by the 6-speed Hewland sequential gearbox. The final GP of the 2022 season in Monza, on 11 September, will be the best opportunity to admire the Dallara F3s live.
