SAIC Motors unveiled in China, at MIIT, the new MG Mulan, a fully electric sedan that will also add to the brand’s European range. As announced by the eastern colossus, the Mulan is a “very sporty” sedanwith low center of gravity guaranteed by the battery that guarantees stability, and performances that see acceleration 0-100 in 3.8 seconds.
No compromise on autonomy, declared to be 600 km; nor on safety, since the model already has passed the EuroNCAP tests obtaining 5 stars thanks to the platform Nebula on which it is built. The price also promises to be competitive: according to MG, will not exceed 200,000 Yuan, equal to € 28,495.
The characteristics of the MG Mulan
Previously known as the MG EH32 or CyberE, the MG Mulan is the brand’s first “global car”, as MG and SAIC will sell it, probably under different brands, in all markets in which they operate. The car will be presented in Europe later this year, but its production is already started at the Ningde plant.
As mentioned, the MG Mulan was born on the Nebula platform of SAIC Motors, and with 4.2 meters long, 1.8 wide, 1.5 high and a wheelbase of 2.7 wants will be a competitor in Europe of cars such as the Volkswagen ID.3, which is longer, but also the new Renault Mégane E-Tech Electric, with lower range, with which it shares the length and the weight optimization, contained to “only”, 1665 kg.
This is due to the ternary battery resulting from the collaboration with Ningde E-CON Power System, a company of the Shanghai E-CON Power System group in which SAIC holds 30% of the shares. The accumulator is in fact very thin, 110 mm in its smallest capacity, and 137 and 140 mm in the larger ones: the compactness is due to the LSB technology, which sees cells placed horizontally and “lying” in the battery body. Autonomy will start from 400 kmwhile the other two cuts bring it up to 500 and 600 km respectively on the WLTP cycle.
At least initially, MG Mulan will be sold with only one electric motor manufactured by UAES, a joint venture between Bosch and Zoomilion, positioned on the rear axle and with a power of 204 HP. A quiet start, but MG Mulan will likely have more powerful engines and all-wheel drive later on. The rear suspension is 5-link, but the Mulan also stands out for its promised turning radius of 5.3 meters, making it particularly ideal for getting around town.
