The Best Impreza McRae Edition project comes from afar. From passion, thanks to a Piedmontese businessman “sick” of rallying, who continues to compete with the official Subaru Impreza Group A, formerly Colin McRae and Piero Liatti. He is Carlo Boroli and his project, which started about three years ago, is to revive, today, the car he loved and admired the most in the hands of the very Scottish champion, who died suddenly in 2007 in a helicopter accident. .

Double inspiration. The Best Impreza McRae Edition is a “continuation car”, that is a car identical in every detail to that of the time, if we exclude the improvements allowed by the current technology, which must not however distort its essence; all in compliance with the FIA ​​regulations of Group A. In short, the sports car, wanted by Boroli, founder of Best, becomes the meeting point between two legends: that of the McRae family and that of the Impreza Group A itself, which fans do not they never forgot. The family of the Scottish champion enthusiastically welcomed the intention to build the car: “This project we are part of is truly wonderful,” confesses Hollie McRae, daughter of Colin. “In the last few months,” Hollie continues, “working with the Best Impreza team, I can feel a part of my father’s story coming back to life. It’s such a special story for our family, so special for the sport and for Scotland too. I can’t wait for it to be appreciated by many others ».

Work and passion. The Best Impreza McRae Edition will be produced in just eight units, and the reason is soon explained: the first seven recall Colin’s victories in the World Rally Championship at the wheel of the official Impreza, while the eighth celebrates the World Championship won by the ace. Scottish in 1995. The car was built by technicians from Best Engineering of Verbania, who studied some original specimens, consulted extensive documentation and spoke to the people who worked on the car at the time. Among them, also Piero Liatti, the former Subaru official driver and winner of the Monte Carlo Rally in 1997, who tried his hand at testing and final tuning the Best Impreza. Here are his feelings: «Ease of driving and cornering speed are the specifications that most characterize the car. The engine, in its delivery, and the precision of the steering, make the “modern Impreza” extremely performing, while maintaining all the charm of “my” old Subaru ».

For connoisseurs. The Best Impreza has a lightened and strengthened frame by means of a series of “gussets” made by the company with design and new Cad design and laser cutting, to obtain maximum strength and torsional rigidity. The rollbar was built on an original Subaru design with particular care in the welds. The electrical system has been completely redesigned with the use of know-how deriving from F1 and according to the new electronic control units used in the management of the engine, gearbox and data that appear on the dashboard. It is now lighter than the original. The carbon central control console gathers, as in the past, all the switches of the various functions, divided as follows: starting, transfer, special test, night. In the bonnet there is a supercharged two-liter boxer engine that delivers around 360 horsepower, which can also be used in everyday driving, built on Best specifications starting from the original monoblocks, with reworked heads. The intercooler is specific to Group A and uses the water injection cooling system.

Gearbox with frontal engagement. The engine is mated to a six-speed front-mounted racing gearbox, with a box made of cast aluminum on an ad hoc design. The technical package obviously includes all-wheel drive and hydraulic management of the central and front differentials from the dashboard (with 10 positions each), while the mechanical rear one is locked at 100%, to ensure maximum traction under acceleration. Optionally, you can also have a more “soft” configuration, with rear self-locking differential. The drive shafts have been oversized and made of aeronautical steel with very high mechanical and torsional resistance. The car, which is sold in an asphalt configuration, uses 18-inch wheels, or 15-inch wheels for dirt (there is also a specific “Earth” kit, from 30,000 euros plus VAT). The magnificent eight are all “one-off” cars, so they will be set up in a unique way, based on the needs and preferences of the lucky collectors who buy them. The price? It starts at 300,000 euros, with the first copy already delivered.

Debut in Scotland. The first official act of the Best Impreza project will be the presentation of the car, together with the McRae family, at the McRae Rally Challenge at the Knockhill Scottish circuit on 2 and 3 July. From 13 to 16 October, however, the Best Impreza McRae Editions will debut in the race at the twentieth edition of Rallylegend, in the Republic of San Marino.
