F1, Canadian GP - Verstappen immediately in the lead in Free Practice 1

The doors of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal open for the first free practice session of the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix. Max Verstappen was the fastest in the first hour of free practice with a time of 1: 15.158, three tenths faster than Carlos Sainz. Third, somewhat surprisingly, Fernando Alonso.

The Top 10. Charles Leclerc finished in fifth position: today he rode with engine 3, equipped with the Baku turbo which was repaired. The Ferrari driver concentrated almost immediately on the simulation of the race with medium tires, probably to avoid the risk of rain which is still present in Montreal today and which could mess up the teams’ plans. Carlos Sainz also ran a busy schedule for the same reason. Between the two Ferrari drivers we find Fernando Alonso with the Alpine, as usual in great shape in the first tests. Well Mercedes, not so much for performance as for the containment of porpoising, also in view of the next FIA directives that will impact on the performance of the cars. George Russell finished sixth, with Lewis Hamilton eighth, but just 5 cents behind his teammate. Closing the Top 10 Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo, respectively on Aston Martin and McLaren.

Changes and penalties. According to official documents published by the FIA, Scuderia AlphaTauri has decided to replace a series of engine components in Yuki Tsunoda’s car and the Japanese will be forced to start from the back of the grid on Sunday. Car number 22 will have a new internal combustion engine, as well as turbocharger, MGU-K, MGU-H, electronic control unit and battery pack. Meanwhile, Ferrari claimed to have permanently lost the broken engine from Leclerc in Baku. A new engine, electronics, new MGU-H and MGU-H will be fitted to the F1-75 of the Monegasque, but he will not take penalties because he will use material that is already part of his seasonal equipment. Same fate for Magnussen, who changed engine, turbocharger and MGU-H.

Towards Free Practice 2. The second test session will start in Italy at 11 pm and it will be possible to follow it live exclusively on Sky and in streaming on Now. To not miss a minute of the action on the track, check out the weekend timetables and our F1 Special.
