The Quattroruote road tests include an analysis of the technical characteristics of the car in question. This week we focus on the BMW iX.

With permanent magnets. Despite being completely new, the iX follows the almost obligatory scheme for electric native models: the front and rear engines are integrated with the reduction gear, the differential and also with the power and control electronics. However, they are different from the usual synchronous with permanent magnets: here the magnetic field necessary for operation is created by circulating the current in the rotor; consequently, sliding contacts are needed, potentially subject to wear (but the BMW technicians assure that their duration is far superior to that of the car). On the other hand, the possibility of adjusting the excitation current provides a further possibility to modify the character of the engine in the different driving modes and allows to expand the range of delivery of the maximum torque. With this solution, moreover, you can do without rare earths, which helps to reduce the CO2 emissions of the iX by 45% over the entire life cycle, compared to those of a comparable combustion car. The Dingolfing plant contributes to this, using renewable energy to produce the car: even the aluminum used in the body is manufactured using solar energy, while the cobalt and lithium for the battery cells come from controlled sources.
