Braking system maintenance: most motorists use their systems regardless of their design. But knowledge of some systems helps to avoid breakdowns and provides more arguments in communicating with professionals. Especially when it comes to brakes.
Sure, there are auto repair shops and people who are specially trained to solve problems with components and assemblies. But if the car is not completely new, then sooner or later the owner will have to personally deal with some subtleties of its repair. L’braking system of the car is used during its operation to reduce the speed of the car until it comes to a complete stop, as well as to keep the car in position (manual parking brake).
According to the structure of the working elements, the brakes are divided into a disc, jaw, belt, conical. The service brakes act on all wheels of the car. Each wheel is equipped with a disc or drum braking mechanism that is operated hydraulically, pneumatically or pneumatically-hydraulically. In the brake mechanism, at the time of the braking process, the brake pads with their friction they are pressed against the brake disc or drum, forcing the car to reduce speed.
L’hydraulic braking system, often equipped with a pneumatic or vacuum booster, it is mainly used on low-capacity cars and trucks. Other cars use a pneumatic system that receives compressed air from the car. THE parking brakes they mostly act only on the drive wheels. To increase the reliability of the braking system and reduce wear on the car parts, a separate drive scheme is used by a pedal to the front and rear wheels, or to duplicate the drive to the rear wheels. On large buses and trucks, additional brakes are used, where the braking torque is generated by the engine.
Of all the fluids used in the car, the most important is the brake fluid. It is one of the elements responsible for the car: no matter how perfect the model is, but without good brake fluid it is impossible to stop quickly. The correctness of the choice will depend on the correct choice and characteristics of the brake fluid, as well as the length of the braking distance of your car.
The main reason why the brake fluid should be replaced periodically is its hygroscopicity. It eventually absorbs moisture from the surrounding air and this causes two problems at the same time. In addition to the fact that humidity reduces the boiling point and therefore compromises the characteristics of the liquid, its evaporation forms a potentially dangerous “vapor crust”. As a result, the brakes react worse to pedaling or do not react at all – and this is an accident
It is necessary to choose brake fluids based on several parameters:
- boiling point
- impact on the rubber
- exposure to metals
- lubricating properties
Replacement of brake elements should be done taking into account the necessity rather than the durability of the car. If you are driving around town, the front pads can fail after 10,000km, although when driving out of town they last 5-6 times longer. The rear pads wear 2-3 times slower.
The main defects of the brake system Worn brake pads
- Low brake pedal Leakage of brake fluid
- Refill the lack of liquid
- Brake pedal too soft
- Liquid boiling due to the increase of the working cylinder temperature
- Great brake pedal travel
- Brake pedal failure Wear of one of the brake cylinders
- Grain when depressing the pedal
- Friction of the worn pad on the brake disc
- Mechanical damage to the surfaces of discs or drums
To avoid negative consequences, if the brake system fails, it is important to be able to get off the road correctly. In the village, for example, the pavement offers additional resistance to traffic. By rubbing a car against the curb, it is possible to significantly reduce the speed. On a long descent, reduce your speed by gradually shifting from higher to lower gears. On rough terrain, try to reach the next hill on the curb, slope or on the opposite lane and, when the speed drops to almost zero, put the car sideways, shifting into reverse or first gear, and apply the brake to but no. This way the car will not be able to roll back. If it is not possible to stop, the danger must be signaled to other road users by sounding an alarm or turning on the headlights. All defects that cause the car to stop abruptly are the result of system failures that directly affect safety. Do not ignore them, therefore, even at the first sign of failure, but go to the nearest assistance service. By ignoring them from the start, you risk incurring expensive repairs in the future. And of course, a good brake system is the key to saving your life!
